NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Sister Mildred Azevedo, formerly known as Sister Maria Assumpta, a member of the Sisters of Charity and resident of Convent of Mary the Queen in Yonkers, died Aug. 19. She was 79.
Sister Azevedo was born Aug. 22, 1932, in New Rochelle to Charles and Susan Ferreira Azevedo. She attended Blessed Sacrament Elementary School and St. Gabriel High School, both in New Rochelle.
She entered the Sisters of Charity on Sept. 8, 1950. Sister Azevedo received a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the College of Mount St. Vincent and a master's of education degree in guidance from Fordham University.
Her first assigment was at St. Stephen's School in Manhattan. Most of her education ministry was at the high school and college levels in Westchester and the Bronx. She spent 10 years at the Academy of Mount St. Vincent in Tuxedo Park, N.Y., as a teacher, guidance counselor and assistant principal.
Sister Azevedo went on to serve as director of guidance at St. Raymond Academy for Girls before returning to her alma mater, St. Gabriel's High School, as principal. She then served as coordinator at St. Patrick's Villa and academic advisor at Elizabeth Seton College in Yonkers and Iona College in New Rochelle.
In 1994, Sister Azevedo served as academic advisor to transfer students at College of Mount St. Vincent. After retiring, she volunteered at the Sisters of Charity Multi-Service Center in Yonkers.
Sister Azevedo was predeceased by a brother, Arnold.
She is survived by two nieces, Susan and Lauren; a nephew, Charly; and her cousin, Dolores Furtado.
A wake will be held from 2 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at the Convent of Mary the Queen in Yonkers, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Thursday, at the convent. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Yonkers, N.Y.
F. Ruggiero and Sons Funeral Home in Yonkers is handling arrangements.
