Saverio 'Sal' Prunesti, 95, Of New Rochelle, Prolific Community Volunteer

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Saverio “Sal” T. Prunesti, 95, of New Rochelle, died Sunday, May 17.

He was a son of the late Francesco and Mary Delfico Prunesti of New Rochelle.

Prunesti conducted U.S. Army bands during World War II, also playing the flute and the piccolo with the Yonkers Pops Band.

He owned a Rheingold beer distributorship and worked at Larchmont’s Redwood Nursery until he was 81.

He was a lifelong Teamster and Knights of Columbus member.

He was a member of the New Rochelle Human Rights Commission when Alvin Ruskin was mayor.

Prunesti also was a past president of both the Casa Calabria Mutual Aid Society and the Bonefro Italian American Club.

Survivors include three daughters, Anne Marie Schiano (Luigi) Lomoriello of Manfredonia, Italy, Linda (David) Mangus of Waretown, N.J., and Mary (Larry) Vail of Tappan, N.Y.; three brothers, Enis Bente, Ronald Prunesti, and Joseph Prunesi; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

His wife, Anne D'Onofrio Prunesti, preceded him in death.

Calling hours will be from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Pizzi Funeral Home, 120 Paris Ave., Northvale, N.J.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church, 120 Kings Highway, Tappan.

Interment will follow in the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 95 Kings Highway, New Rochelle.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018.
