Salvatore LaPera, 96, New Rochelle Resident

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Salvatore LaPera, a lifelong resident of New Rochelle, passed away on Aug. 15. He was 96.

Sal was born on Dec. 14, 1918 in New Rochelle to the late Gennero and Christina (Bisignano) LaPera. Sal served in the US Army during World War II. As a young man he worked as an independent painting contractor with his brother for many years. He then became Director of the former South Side Boys Club for more than 25 years. He was a wonderful mentor to all the young athletes and members of the Boys Club during the 50's, 60's and 70's.

In his later years, Sal became a successful Realtor in New Rochelle. He was predeceased by his wife the former Levia Zallo whom he married on March 23, 1942. She died on Jan. 30, 2014. He is survived by his devoted daughter Christine Camillone, his beloved granddaughter Tracy (Camillone) Greco and her husband Christopher and his great grandchildren Christopher M. Greco and Gabriella Lee Greco and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers: Domenic, Frank and George LaPera and two sisters Julia (LaPera) Mauro Summa, and Filomena "Dolly" (LaPera) McDonald.

Visiting will be Monday 4 to 8 p.m. at Lloyd Maxcy & Sons Beauchamp Chapel Inc. in New Rochelle. A funeral Mass is scheduled on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church. Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be may to Autism Speaks.
