Robert John Smith, 91, Detective In The New Rochelle Police Department

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Robert John Smith, a lifelong resident of New Rochelle, Dec. 14. He was 91.

Smith was born Nov. 16, 1922, to Elizabeth and Robert A. Smith. He served in the United States Navy Seabees during World War II. Upon his return from the war, he joined the New Rochelle Police Department in 1947 and was promoted to detective in 1957. He retired in 1983.

Smith is survived by his children, Robert John Smith, Jr. (Deborah), Nancy Smith Gribbin (James), Thomas R. Smith (Diane); five grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters. He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Rumery Smith.

Calling hours are Monday, Dec. 16 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at George T. Davis Funeral Home, 14 Lecount Place, New Rochelle. A Mass will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17 at Holy Name of Jesus Church. Interment will follow at Beechwoods Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Smith's memory to the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org) to further research into this disease.
