NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Nicholas "Scoop" Gallello, a lifelong resident of New Rochelle, died Wednesday, April 15. He was 95.
Gallello was born on Nov. 2, 1919, to Marcello and Mary (nee Nicoletti) Gallello. He graduated from New Rochelle High School in 1937. He developed a love for boxing, winning the Victory Glove Championship in 1942, training boxers and writing a local newspaper column.
He was elected president of the International Veteran Boxers Association and was inducted into both the New Rochelle Sports Hall of Fame and the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame.
Gallello was predeceased by his wife, Filomena "Dee" (nee D'Esposito), daughter Mary O'Keefe, sister Josephine Carafa and brothers Franklin, Roosevelt "Babe" and Louis.
He is survived by his children, Marcello "Butch" Gallello, Josephine Short and her husband, Fred, and Kathleen Gallello; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters Rose Devito and Lucy Piccino; his brother Thomas; and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be on Sunday, April 19, from 2-9 p.m. at Lloyd Maxcy & Sons Beauchamp Chapel, 16 Shea Place, New Rochelle.
A funeral Mass is scheduled for Monday, April 20, at Blessed Sacrament Church at 10:30 a.m.
Interment will follow at Beechwoods Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ALS Association, New York Chapter, 42 Broadway, Suite 1724, New York, NY 10004, in memory of Mary P. O'Keefe.
