NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Jazz icon Horace Silver died in his New Rochelle home on Wednesday, June 18, according to The New York Times. He was 85.

Silver, a native of Norwalk, Conn., began performing in the 1950s at a time when cool jazz, a smoother variation on the genre, was the most popular. Silver became a pioneer in what eventually became known as hard bop, The New York Times said.

Silver became known for nurturing and mentoring young jazz talent as the head of the Horace Silver Quintet.  As jazz began to fade in the 1970s, Silver disbanded the quintet and formed his own label, Silveto, The New York Times said.
