George W. Bartels, Former Assistant To New Rochelle CM, Dies At 94

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – George W. Bartels, former New Rochelle assistant to the city manager, died on Jan. 16 in his home in Pompano Beach, Fla. He was 94.

Bartels was born on April 14, 1920 in New York City, to Henry and Isabella Bartels. In 1941, he married Joan T. Neuthard, who preceded him in death. He served six years in the U.S. Army and was a supply officer at the Nuremberg trials. He remained in Germany until 1953, serving as High Commissioner for County Leonberg. In 1959, he was appointed assistant to the city manager in New Rochelle, a position he held until his retirement in 1982. Bartels obtained the rank of colonel with the U.S. Army Active Reserve. He was active in many civic organizations, including the Rotary Club of New Rochelle and the New Rochelle Day Nursery.

He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Sherber of Stamford; two grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.
