On a somber, rainy day, cars lined the streets of Tuckahoe, directed by local police officials as they made their way to the church, which saw a steady stream of mourners making their way into the church. He was then cremated in a private ceremony with close family and friends.

Crimmins, 22, the stepson of Yonkers Superintendent of Schools Michael Yazurlo and a former head lifeguard at Lake Isle Country Club in Eastchester, was swimming with friends on July 4 off Mantoloking when he suffered from a medical condition that caused seizures, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s office, which conducted the investigation.

“John was tragically taken from my wife Nancy, her daughter Nicole and myself when he drowned off the New Jersey coast,” Yazurlo said in a statement following the news of his stepson’s passing. “Our hearts are heavy, we will miss John.”

According to investigator Al Della Fave’s report, Crimmins was “an avid surfer and lifeguard that suffered from a medical condition which caused seizures.” An autopsy determined that Crimmins died from drowning, citing idiopathic epileptic seizures contributing to the incident.

“(The news) was so unexpected, he loved to swim, it’s such a surprise,” former classmate Julie Angerer said on Thursday. “It’s just really sad.”
