Sergiovanni was born April 18, 1937, in New Rochelle. Raised in New Rochelle, he graduated from SUNY Geneseo with a degree in education. He received a master's degree from Columbia University and a Ph.D. from the University of Rochester.
He also received honorary degrees from the University of San Diego and the State University of New York. Sergiovanni dedicated his career to improving education, his family said.
He spent 19 years as a professor at the University of Illinois and more than 25 years at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, as the Lillian Radford Distinguished Professor of Education.
Sergiovanni was an internationally respected scholar, lecturer and author of more than 30 books on educational leadership, published in numerous editions and translations during a career that spanned more than 50 years.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Elizabeth Ann, of Plano, Texas; three children, Susan, John and Steven; a daughter-in-law, Sheila; and four grandchildren.
