Brother Carmine Peter Pellegrino, 65, Of New Rochelle

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Brother Carmine Peter Pellegrino, C.F.C., a member of the Christian Brothers' community at Iona Prep in New Rochelle, died on Friday, Jan. 16, in New Rochelle. He was 65.

Pellegrino was born Dec. 20, 1949, in New York to Dr. Peter and Margaret Pellegrino and was raised in New Rochelle. He attended Iona Grammar School, Blessed Sacrament High School and Iona College in New Rochelle, where he received his bachelor of arts degree in history in 1972.

He continued with graduate studies, earning an master's of education in social studies from Iona and an master's degree in History from New York University.

In 1972, Pellegrino entered the Congregation of Christian Brothers and made his First Profession of Vows in September of 1973. His pronounced his Final Vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience on June 27, 1979. As a Christian Brother educator, he served at St. Cecilia's Grammar School, Power Memorial Academy, All Hallows High School and Rice High School in New York City, and Essex Catholic High School in Newark, N.J. 

For more than 20 years, he has served on the faculty of Iona Preparatory School in New Rochelle as a member of the history department, and involving himself in numerous activities in the school community.

His dedication to his classes and students, his religious community of brothers and his faithfulness to his religious vocation was apparent to all. Up until his final diagnosis with pancreatic cancer in December, he remained active and involved, a trait he never lost despite frequent bouts with poor health throughout his adult life. 

He is survived by his sister; two brothers; several nieces and nephews; and the members of the Congregation of Christian Brothers, with whom he shared life for 43 years.

Wake and visitation will be held at the Iona Prep Chapel on Tuesday, Jan. 20, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, Jan. 21, at St. Pius X Church in Scarsdale at 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow at the Brothers' cemetery in West Park, N.Y.
