Anthony Amoroso, 89, New Rochelle Marine Veteran

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Anthony F. Amoroso, a lifelong resident of New Rochelle, died June 21. He was 89. 

Born Jan. 6, 1923, in New Rochelle, he was the son of Pasquale and Marie Amoroso. He attended New Rochelle schools and operated the family business "Samela Press" on Union Avenue with his brothers. 

Amoroso served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II for nine years. On Aug. 10, 1947, he married the former Sadie Possidento, who survives him. An avid golfer, Amoroso enjoyed bowling and was a member of the New Rochelle Boys Club and Elks Club. 

He is survived by three daughters, Patricia Samela, Susan (Thomas) Hamill and Christine (Anthony) Siller-Venettozzi; a son, Matthew (Cindy) Amoroso; three sisters, Ann Melillo, Marie Grove and Vera English; 12 grandchildren and a great-grandson. He was predeceased by three brothers and seven sisters. 

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at George T. Davis Funeral Home in New Rochelle. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Name of Jesus Church in New Rochelle. Burial will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or a favorite charity.
