White Plains Students Raise Money for Animals

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Students at White Plains' Mamaroneck Avenue Elementary School collected nearly $1,000 for the New Rochelle Humane Society by dipping into their allowances and selling crafts.

As part of the Parents As Reading Partners (PARP) initiative, Mamaroneck Avenue students spent three weeks fundraising for the humane society. Last week, Dianne Heim, a board of directors member at the New Rochelle non-profit, came to pick up the check.

"They had the entire school in the gym and then they called them up by grade. The kids came up with change jars and each grade filled up a punch bowl. The three grades with the most won an award," said Heim. "It was so nice to see that they were so excited to be giving the money."

Mamaroneck Avenue's effort was aided by Gus, a three-year-old Labradoodle, who works with a special education teacher as a therapy dog and has become a school mascot for the PARP initiative.

The $1,000 will benefit Gus' peers, according to Heim.

"The money is going to make the animals more comfortable and to buy them goodies and treats and toys," said Heim.
