What's Happening in New Rochelle This Weekend

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – A meeting on the comprehensive plan and a soap box derby are some of the events planned for the weekend.

Friday, June 8

New Rochelle Comprehensive Plan Meeting: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The final meeting of phase one for the city’s comprehensive plan takes place. The meeting allows residents to provide input about what they want the city to be in the future. New Rochelle City Hall. 515 North Ave.

Senior Benefits Information Center: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Assistance in identifying benefits, such as Medicare health and prescription, food stamps, HEAP, EPIC, weatherization, minor home repairs, tax-relief programs and others is available in the New Rochelle Public Library’s new information center. Trained volunteers provide free, confidential one-on-one counseling and access to print and online materials. BTOP Help Center, second floor. New Rochelle Public Library, One Library Plaza.

Saturday, June 9

Friends of the New Rochelle Public Library Book Sale: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The organization has its bi-weekly book sale in the back of the first floor of the library. Books and other items wil be for sale. New Rochelle Public Library, One Library Plaza.

Sunday, June 10

New Rochelle Soap Box Derby: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Uniformed Fire Fighters Association Local 273 hosts its 10th annual derby. There is no fee. The event brings children from all over the county who race gravity powered cars down Quaker Ridge Road for a chance to compete in the World Championship Race in Akron, Ohio. Two winners from the event will be sent to Akron, representing the Queen City of the Sound, where they will race for scholarships, prizes and bragging rights as a world champion if they win. Eighteen children from the city have gone in the past. Food will be available at the association’s concession stand.
