NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. Habitat for Humanity of Westchester was the recent recipient of a $5,602.04 check donation from the Lambda Theta Phi Foundations Haiti Relief Efforts.
The amount was the last of the foundations two-year fundraising effort to help organizations aid Haiti with their relief efforts $100,000 was collected overall.
Efforts began after Chairperson Agustin Garcia went over to Haiti a day after the earthquake. Garcia said he then contacted individuals whom he thought could help set up, organize and spearhead fundraising.
Habitat for Humanity of Westchester became involved after the foundation contacted Jim Killoran, executive director, about how to donate to Haiti relief efforts.
Killoran has been to the nation and plans to go back.
We are the No. 1 Habitat affiliation that has serviced the most homes to Haiti, Killoran said.
Funds were directly donated to affiliates in the nation who then gave them to individuals and families in need, according to information provided by the foundation.
Eighty wheel chairs, 215 sets of crutches, nearly a ton of food, medical supplies, power generators, stretchers along with other medical essentials were also collected.
These grassroots efforts helps ensure every penny reached and helped the Haitian people, the foundation said in a statement.
The foundation finished fundraising in 2010 with a total of more than $14,000, including three separate payments between early 2010 and July 2011.
The Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority Inc., and Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity Inc. also helped in the collaborative efforts to help raise money.
