The break caused part of the road to collapse on itself shortly before 4 p.m., creating a massive hole that even swallowed up one car, according to police.

Hundreds of homes in the area, near the Scarsdale border, were without water for a few hours, though service was restored to most by nightfall. Construction crews remained on the scene Sunday, patching up the area and continuing to work on restoring service to other homes.

The main pipe had to be repaired by United Water employees, who responded to the scene along with New Rochelle police and fire officials.

The car that was was sucked into hole was later lifted out by a tow truck.

No injuries were reported to police, who said that the three occupants of the car were able to get out of the vehicle and walk away unassisted.

For the immediate future, motorists on Wilmot Road will be detoured around the area while construction and restoration continues.
