Roadwork Closes Lane of Garden Street in New Rochelle

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — The middle lane on Garden Street in New Rochelle is currently closed to traffic, due in part to the North Avenue Construction Project to move utility lines from the North Avenue Bridge.

The lane heading onto the northbound side of North Avenue from Interstate 95 and Palmer Avenue is closed. Motorists traveling south on North Avenue will not be able to make a left  turn onto Garden Street when added detours are put in place soon. Detour signs have been posted on the avenue’s southbound side, directing drivers to alternate routes to access I-95 from Route 1.

Drivers will eventually be able to use Memorial Highway, by way of Lincoln Avenue, Lockwood Avenue or Huguenot Street, the city of New Rochelle said.

The partial closure is expected to last 90 days.

The entrance to Garden Street from North Avenue northbound will remain open. More information on the project can be found on the city’s website.

The project by the New York State Thruway Authority is moving electric, cable, telephone, water, fiber optic and natural gas lines from the existing North Avenue Bridge to a parallel span that was built in 2010, the city said.

This work is expected to be completed by May 2013, conditions permitting. The next phase of the project — demolition and replacement of the North Avenue Bridge — is scheduled to begin in 2015, the city said.
