Generations of New Rochelle residents and Iona students have enjoyed the classic diner menu at the Mirage over the years, which will be replaced by a mixed-use, six-seven-story residence hall that will house more than 300 students and include retail and restaurant space on the lower levels.

With cleanup being completed at the demolition site, the process will begin anew on the residences behind the diner. Iona President Joseph Nyre noted that this is just the beginning of the college’s partnership with the city to improve North Avenue.

“We are working hard to be good neighbors and are pleased to support the revitalization of North Avenue,” he said in a statement. “Additional investments in North Avenue have also been introduced by the college.”

With the popular eatery now a thing of the past, students who enjoyed the diner’s close proximity to Iona’s campus will have to go elsewhere for their favorite diner fare.

“I’ve spent a lot of time and ate a lot of meals there, so it’s a little strange and definitely a bummer,” Iona College student Matthew Richter said. “I think (students) are definitely going to miss it.”
