Tolls paid by drivers in the tri-state area account for nearly one-third of all the tolls paid in the United States every year, or more than $4 billion, statistica.com said.

The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey comes second in annual toll revenue, soaking metro area commuters for $1.3 billion, said statistica.com, an internet site that analyzes numbers.

MTA Bridges and Tunnels comes in third with annual toll revenue of $1.2 billion.

The New Jersey Turnpike, 122 miles long, is the highest-earning toll generator in the country, collecting $1.4 billion every year, said statistica.com. The turnpike authority collects more revenue than any U.S. toll agency.

Coming in a distant fourth is the Illinois Tollway, at $943 million.

There are 5,932 miles of toll roads in the U.S., and 35 states or territories have at least one toll road, tunnel or bridge, according to statistica.com. America’s toll agencies collect about $13 billion in revenue every year, the IBTTA reports, with most of the money going to fund the cost of maintaining the infrastructure. The money makes up the difference in actual costs and the amount provided by federal and state fuel taxes.
