NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Makeshift walkways have been constructed to help direct pedestrian traffic while a portion of the sidewalk is closed during the North Avenue Utility Relocation Project.
Pedestrians can walk north or south on the right side of the road, go left on the right side of Burling Lane or follow the walkways further down on North Avenue in either direction.
There are no makeshift walkways on the sidewalks after the North Avenue bridge and before or after the New Rochelle train station.
The project is being conducted by the New York State Thruway Authority to relocate electric, cable, telephone, water, fiber optic and natural gas lines from the existing North Avenue Bridge to a parallel span that was constructed in 2010.
Work on the utility lines is expected to be completed by May 2013, the state said. Demolition and replacement of the North Avenue Bridge is tentatively scheduled to begin in 2015.
