New Rochelle's Garden Street South Entrance Closed

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — The Garden Street entrance heading towards interstate 95 and Palmer Avenue coming from the southbound side of North Avenue is now closed to traffic because of the North Avenue Construction Project.

Construction barriers block off the lane along with a Do Not Enter sign.

Motorists traveling south on North Avenue cannot make a left turn onto the street now that the added detours are in place.

Detour signs have been posted on the avenue’s southbound side directing drivers to alternative routes to access the interstate from Route 1.

Drivers can use Memorial Highway, by way of Lincoln Avenue, Lockwood Avenue or Huguenot Street, the city of New Rochelle said.

The partial closure is expected to last 90 days.

The entrance to Garden Street from North Avenue northbound will remain open. The street's middle lane leading to Burling Lane has been blocked off because of work being done on the roadway forcing its closure. More information on the project can be found on the city’s website.

The project by the New York State Thruway Authority is moving electric, cable, telephone, water, fiber optic and natural gas lines from the existing North Avenue Bridge to a parallel span that was built in 2010, the city said.

This work is expected to be completed by May 2013, conditions permitting.  The next phase of the project — demolition and replacement of the North Avenue Bridge — is scheduled to begin in 2015, the city said.
