NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – New Rochelle resident Martin Sanchez wants to see the city’s new enforcement traffic cameras put in the city’s north end.

Sanchez, in the New Rochelle Daily Voice comments section, said he feels the devices should be on Quaker Ridge Road and North Avenue, Quaker Ridge Road near Ward Elementary School and Albert Leonard Middle, all along Pinebrook, and North Avenue near Wilmot Road.

“There is no need to put them anywhere else as there is an overwhelming police presence in the west end already,” he said.

The City Council on Tuesday approved issuing bonds to borrow $72,000 for the cost. Authorization to install traffic cameras to enforce red lights is among several items the city is sending to New York state as part of its 2013 legislative program.

The council approved issuing bonds to borrow $1.5 million to purchase a firetruck, a van to transport senior citizens and vehicles for the Public Works Department, and to repair storm drains and sanitary sewers throughout the city.

The traffic cameras and the other items are already included in the city's 2013 capital budget:

  • Public Works trucks and vehicles, $625,000
  • Fire engine, $585,000
  • Storm drain and sanitary sewer improvements, $250,000
  • Traffic enforcement cameras, $72,000
  • Senior citizen van, $53,000

The enforcement cameras will be placed at various locations throughout the city according to meeting documents.

New Rochelle resident Abby McKay feels an enforcement camera should be put on the top of Franklin Avenue and Main Street.

“Cars always make a right on red, even though there is a huge sign No Turn on Red!!!!” she said in a post on the New Rochelle Daily Voice facebook page.
