In the past few years, red light cameras have been installed at some of New Rochelle’s busiest intersections in an effort to improve traffic safety throughout the city. Each violation costs a motorist $50.

On those ticket forms, violators were told to pay the fine either online or with certified check, with a 12 percent surcharge fee that added $6 to the fine. A third option, “pay by personal check” was not on the form, prompting many motorists to have to pay the additional fee.

According to a CBS report, New Rochelle has been netting approximately $40,000 per month in ticket revenue.

Officials in New Rochelle said the omission was an administrative oversight and it has since been rectified. They also noted that personal checks had previously been accepted, even if it wasn’t an option on the ticket form.
