Mayor Noam Bramson joined Master Gardner Bob DelTorto, task force leaders Julie Larkin, Rob Feuer, junior leader Cole Feuer – who actually spearheaded the efforts at the park – and a team of well-intentioned good Samaritans Sunday to hack away at the invasive vines that suck the life out of native foliage.
The day began with an hour-long workshop hosted by DelTorto – who also serves as the task committee coordinator – regarding safety protocol and proper removal of the plants, followed by two hours in the sun chopping down the weeds, which have become a problem in recent years.
Moving forward, there will be several more interactive weed removal workshops in the community. Those interested in volunteering can contact program staff liaison Dan Spector at dspector@newrochelleny.com or Larkin at julielarkin2@verizon.net.
City officials noted the program provides a good opportunity for students looking for community service and for good Samaritans looking to beautify their neighborhood.
“Many of our region's parks are overrun with invasive vines. While the vines can have a certain jungle-like charm, they are truly awful for the long-term health and ecology of native species,” Bramson said about the initiative.
