NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- The lockout at New Rochelle High School, which occurred Thursday afternoon following reports of shots fired nearby, has been lifted.

The lockout went into affect at 12:22 p.m. after the reports that gun shots were heard, possibly coming from Nature Study Woods near Webster Avenue.

Westchester County Police initially received a report from neighbors that gunshots were heard at 12:20 p.m., and New Rochelle Police, who were first on the scene, also reported they heard gunshots, said Kieran O'Leary, Westchester County police spokesman.

"It's a fluid situation," O'Leary said.

The investigation is ongoing and a helicopter searched the area.

New Rochelle High School senior Alex Corleone was out at lunch when he heard the shots.

"When I got to the school about five minutes after the shots, they just told us it was in lockout," he said. "Hopefully it was just a bunch of dumb kids messing around and no one got hurt.

"We just heard some loud noises and we go hunting, so we know what gunshots sound like."
