Countless commuters had a less-than-pleasant trek to make Friday morning, as New Rochelle roads were mostly plowed but plenty icy, as Department of Public Works crews continued to clear snow off the roads following Thursday’s storm.
According to city officials, the cause of the icy roads is a short salt supply, which has hamstrung DPW crews.
“While nearly all local roads have been plowed, and while DPW will continue working throughout the day and weekend, salt supplies – not just in New Rochelle, but throughout the region – are running very low, and an expected shipment of salt from the regional supplier has not yet arrived,” Mayor Noam Bramson warned. “As a result, in this last storm, DPW crews have been able to use salt only at a few crucial locations.”
All is not lost, however, for New Rochelle residents. The National Weather Service is calling for a warm, sunny weekend, with temperatures peaking around 40 degrees, which will accelerate the snow melting, allowing DPW crews to shift their attention to the roadways, which have become littered with potholes after a harsh winter.
“The city is retaining contractors to accelerate the repair of potholes,” Bramson added. “Many spots need attention, and we’ll be moving as quickly as the weather permits to restore acceptable conditions.”
