If approved, the city would assist the schools with sanitation collection, increase Wi-Fi accessibility at City Hall and school buildings as well as coordinate field space usage with the New Rochelle Parks Department and the district’s Athletic Departments.

New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson made note that this is a collaboration the two sides have been working on for some time.

“This isn’t a new topic. The city and school district have long worked together on things like tax collection, and more recently, on student enrollment projections,” he stated. “The difference is that we are now exploring a wider range of options, with strong encouragement from the leadership of both institutions.”

Presently, the school district collects refuse and recycling from their facilities. Under the proposed agreement, crews from the Department of Public Works would provide that service at a 50 percent discount. It has estimated that that program could begin as soon as the next academic school year.

In a memo to the City Council, City Manager Chuck Strome stressed that a partnership between the city and schools could also benefit other outlets, including the police.

“The school district’s outdoor Wi-Fi on school roofs could add virtual VLAM for police and remote vehicles to connect to Internet access,” he noted. “The school district’s fiber network could be used at city locations to share a strand to connect back to city hall.”

Moving forward, the city and school district will continue collaborating on youth, summer middle school, tutorial, girls and boys youth basketball and summer youth nutrition programs.
