The City Council unanimously agreed to take an “in-depth, professional look at business models” for a new ice rink and indoor athletic facility that will be open to the public.

Though the project is only in the opening stages, the City Council has hired consulting group Ballard and King to conduct an analysis of marketing conditions, the costs of any proposed ice rink, and how much revenue the potential athletics facility would generate for the city.

New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson has noted that the city has been eager to construct a new local rink since the New Roc City location was shut down to the public nearly a decade ago, but they have been slowed due to the recent economic struggle and other hurdles.

He said that recently a private group made a “promising” proposal, but many questions remain, which he hopes will be answered by Ballard and King. The results of their analysis is expected to be delivered no later than the end of the summer.

“Healthy communities have good recreational assets,” Bramson stated. “And while New Rochelle can boast many great parks and playing fields, the closure of the ice rink at New Roc City several years ago was a loss, forcing many hockey families, and others that enjoy skating, to go elsewhere for ice time.

“I am hopeful that the forthcoming analysis will demonstrate the viability o the concept and then allow us to consider options for proceeding.”
