NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. Sydelle Meinkes observed National Popcorn Day Thursday by munching on some kernels while enjoying a blast from the past the radio comedy of Burns and Allen.
Meinkes and other seniors at the Hugh A. Doyle Senior Center got to enjoy a healthy snack while reminiscing about the old days, such as when they gathered around the radio to listen to the husband and wife team of George Burns and Gracie Allen.
It makes you more happy, said Meinkes, who knitted while listening to the classic comedy. It brings back good memories," she said.
National Popcorn Day is celebrated at the end of January, although its exact date is a matter of debate. Various sources report it as Jan. 19 others claim it's on Super Bowl Sunday, according to popcorn.org.
The center provided the 20 seniors in attendance with the chance to hear up to six hours of the best of Burns and Allen from a collection called "The Best of Old Time Radio."
They have something to do, listening to the favorites, (eating) healthy, remembering the old times, said center Nutrition Manager Fran Campisi.
Meinkes said she has seen a change in how people lived in the early-to-mid-1900s compared to the 21st century.
"Things are not like they used to be, Meinkes said. People dont know how to enjoy themselves, and keep themselves occupied.
