The presenter will be nationally recognized urban wildlife expert Lynsey White Dasher, Director of Humane Wildlife Conflict Resolution for The Humane Society of the United States. Conflicts between coyotes, people, and pets have become an increasingly common problem in urban and suburban areas across the country, and New Castle is no exception. In response to increased sightings and concerns about coyotes, the New Castle Police Department is hosting this seminar that will cover topics such as what attracts coyotes to neighborhoods, how to prevent attacks on pets, how to respond to habituated or bold coyotes, and how to prevent conflicts with coyotes from occurring. The seminar will also include information on specific coyote hazing techniques. Coyote hazing is a tool in coyote management that employs the immediate use of deterrents to move a coyote out of an area or discourage an undesirable behavior or activity. Coyote hazing has been used successfully in communities such as Denver, Colorado to eliminate bold or aggressive behavior in coyotes (such as attacking pets and bold behavior toward people) . Prior to the community seminar Lynsey White Dasher will conduct the HSUS’s Troubleshooting Conflicts with Coyotes workshop for New Castle Police and animal control personnel. The police training along with the public seminar will provide the New Castle community with an informed and unified approach in dealing with the coyote population.
