New Rochelle's Wallachs Help Larchmont Woman Reunite With Class Ring

LARCHMONT, N.Y. -- Just in time for the holidays, a Larchmont woman, Diane Hall, was reunited with her high school ring on Saturday after losing it nearly 30 years ago.

The case of the missing ring took some detective work from a friend and fellow high school alum, Ruby Engel, and a good deed by Gina Wallach of Wallach Jewelry Designs store at 1953 Palmer Ave.  A few weeks ago, Wallach, a New Rochelle resident,  purchased a gold ladies Class of 1971 ring from Herricks High School in New Hyde Park, N.Y., that apparently was found in a Yonkers apartment when the carpet was ripped up.

Gina Wallach, rather than melt it for the gold, decided to post a photo of the ring on the Herricks Alumni Facebook page.

Just by chance, Ruby Engel -- a Herricks alum from the Class of 1983 --  happened to see Wallach's post.

"When I saw the year, and learned what initials were engraved on the ring (DRG), along with the local find, I wondered whether it might belong to Diane Hall, a fellow Larchmonter and friend whose maiden name was Diane Geberth,'' Engel explained.

"Diane and I became friends when our now college kids were in kindergarten and I knew that she and her husband, Russell, were both Herricks alums as well," Engel said.

Engel called her friend and asked her whether she had lost her Herricks ring and her immediate response was, "Yes!  About 30 years ago, in a move."

Engel told her what initials were engraved on it which confirmed that it was, in fact, Diane's ring. Her middle name is Roberta.

While there are other women from the Herricks Class of 1971 whose initials were DG, none have a middle name that begins with the letter R. Since Diane is not on Facebook, Engel acted as an intermediary and put Gina Wallach and Diane in touch with one another. On Saturday, Engel was lucky enough to be present when Wallach returned the ring to Diane Geberth Hall. "We keep calling it a Christmas/holiday miracle!" Engel exclaimed. "It is so unbelievable that the ring was here in Larchmont where Diane lives, that I happened to see the post on a Facebook page I do not check frequently, that I happen to know Diane AND her maiden name so I could make the connection for her. . . . It really is nothing short of miraculous!"

"And, of course, it is so wonderful that Gina decided to find the long lost owner and not melt down the ring after all,'' Engel said.
