Iona College Softball Opens College World Series

The Iona College softball team opens regional play Friday, in the NCAA Division I College Softball World Series.

The Lady Gaels, who won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference for a third consecutive year, are in Berkeley, Calif., along with Boston University, Arkansas and top-ranked/host University of California.

Iona (35-24) opens with California (50-4) at 10 p.m.. Boston U. and Arkansas will play at 8 p.m.

Iona won the MAAC on the strength of pitching, as Sarah Jackson and Alyssa Maiese allowed only three runs in five games. One of the games was a 15-inning marathon.
