Iona And Habitat Commemorate Sept. 11 Anniversary

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Iona students, New Rochelle residents, and Habitat For Humanity joined together Tuesday to pray for those killed in the 9/11 attacks.

The service was held at the first-ever Habitat Community Garden made by the students.

Iona Campus Ministry student leader Jess Scaparro said the project was one of the most special ones she and other ministry members have worked on with Habitat.

“It was really inspiring because it was a 9/11 event,” she said.

Center for Campus Ministries Director Carl Procario-Foley said the prayer service was an example of the good done on Earth, and reflection on past events.

“It’s very powerful,” he said.

Iona English professor Scott Cleary brought his 9/11 Literature class to help commemorate the tragedy. Cleary began the class at Iona last year to teach students about the tragedy.

“It affects me personally,” he said. Cleary was a graduate student at New York University at the time.

Habitat Executive Director Jim Killoran said the event will be held again in years to come.
