Fall leaf collection begins in New Rochelle Tuesday and continues through the end of December. All leaves must be placed in bio-degradable paper bags or open containers and weigh no more than 75 pounds for collection. Loose leaves will not be picked up, officials said.

This year, weekly leaf collection will follow four routes. Bags and containers can be placed at the curb anytime but have to be at the curb by 7 a.m. on the following days for pickup:

NORTH END Monday: North side of Quaker Ridge Road to Scarsdale border; Tuesday: North side of Eastchester Road, Beechmont Drive and Barnard Road, to the south side of Quaker Ridge Road.

SOUTH END Wednesday: North side of Metro-North Railroad to the south side of Eastchester Road, Beechmont Drive and Barnard Road; Thursday: South of Metro-North Railroad.

Friday will be the alternate pick-up day if a holiday falls on a pick-up day. There will be no collection Thanksgiving week.

Officials ask resident do not mix yard waste with leaves. Licensed landscapers and gardeners can dispose of leaves at the city’s yard waste transfer site at 85 Beechwood Ave. from 7:30 a.m.to 3 p.m. weekdays. Vouchers can be purchased from the city clerk’s office at City Hall, 515 North Ave., from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

Officials suggest rather than raking, bagging or transporting leaves off-site this year, consider mulching, a sustainable alternative that actually benefits lawns and gardens.

Mulch mowing demonstrations will be conducted:

• Saturday at 4 p.m. at New Rochelle High School, North Avenue in front of Twin Lakes.

• Saturday, Oct. 24 at 11 a.m. at GROW! Lincoln Park Community Garden.

• Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m. at the College of New Rochelle.
