Detours, Delays on New Rochelle's North Avenue

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Commuters have begun seeing delays and detours related to the North Avenue Utility Relocation Project.

Traffic is being diverted to one lane in each direction on the North Avenue side of the New Rochelle Train Station and the area near Burling Lane while the second phase of the project is completed.

Delays can be expected in both directions. Drivers must stop before merging into the left southbound lane to avoid construction blocks at Burling Lane. Traffic flow is diverted to the right lane going northbound. Arrows direct drivers to merge into the right lane since the left lane is blocked by cones.

Drivers can use side streets as detours except Burling Lane, which has been closed for construction since February.

The project is being conducted by the New York State Thruway Authority Project to relocate electric, cable, telephone, water, fiber optic and natural gas lines from the existing North Avenue Bridge to a parallel span that was constructed in 2010.

All work on the utility lines is expected to be completed by May 2013, the state said. After that, the demolition and replacement of the North Avenue Bridge is tentatively scheduled to begin in 2015.

Work will be done from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., officials said. The second phase will last about 30 days, after which the third phase will begin, they added.

The third phase is expected to last 10 days and work will be done 24 hours a day. Work is scheduled to be finished on that phase by May 30.
