Danger Lurks At Many Westchester Intersections

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- At some intersections in Westchester, just making a left turn can be a perilous adventure.

The intersection at North State Road and Route 9A in Briarcliff Manor is considered especially treacherous.

One particular dangerous intersection is at Route 22 and the Cross Westchester Expressway by Stop and Shop.

"When I was a volunteer firefighter and EMT in North White Plains, we regularly had accidents there," Aimee Nichols said.

Nichols, a Mount Pleasant resident, said the corner of Elmwood Avenue and Route 141 is a dangerous spot in Hawthorne.

"There is no traffic light there, and a blind spot when cars are parked in the spots there.  Especially if there are SUVs," Nichols said.

Another dangerous intersection, at Commerce and Elwood Avenue, saw a pedestrian struck and killed there.

"There is a stop sign but no traffic light and a bad blind spot," Nichols said.

Former Briarcliff Manor Mayor Bill Vescio said the intersection of Route 9A and North State Road was a big problem in his village.

Vescio said numerous accidents, including those involving pedestrians, have occurred.

"New York State has changed the timing, but it's still a major problem," Vescio said.

The lack of a left turn lane has also caused problems at the intersection.

"This backs up traffic along North State road causing delays and blocks entrances to businesses," Vescio said.

In Yorktown, residents have complained about the Route 202 and Route 35 intersection.

"I had an accident there years ago," Joanne Colangelo said. "People are constantly trying to beat the light and actually go through it. It's even more confusing with people merging onto 202 by Twist, not paying attention to the cars that have the right of way to turn from the other direction."

White Plains is home to the intersection at Maple Avenue and Bloomingdale Road.

"It gets dangerous despite the traffic lights," Kelsey Belgrave said. "Sometimes people drift into lanes upon turning left from Maple onto Bloomingdale Road. The lines are very faint and unless you’re familiar with the area, drifting is inevitable."

In Armonk, the Bedford Road and Main Street intersection can be treacherous.

"If you're trying to make a turn from Bedford Road into Main Street, it is difficult to make right and left turns," Kathy Reilly Fallon said.
