NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- The resurgence in the popularity of craft beer can leave you wondering how successful you might be if you brewed your own.
To help you find out, New Rochelle will soon have a place where beer and wine lovers can go to get started brewing their own brand. The Homebrew Emporium is opening its fifth location on North Avenue across from City Hall by the end of the month.
Roger Savoy, owner of the company, told The Daily Voice he wanted to capitalize on the lack of home-brewing stores in Westchester County and New York City, and provide brewers in the area with a place to go.
The store will sell equipment for brewing beer, making wine and cheese, specialty foods and 50 different spices. Employees will guide home-brewers of all experience levels in making the best choices.
The store will be overseen by Yonkers native Phil Clarke, an award-winning home-brewer and mead maker.
Clarke has over a decade of experience brewing and is a member of the Westchester Homebrew Organization. He is excited to bring home-brewing to New Rochelle.
“New Rochelle is a great place where I spent time when I was younger. It’s easily accessible to brewers and winemakers in Westchester and the lower Hudson Valley, as well as NYC. And there are a lot of brewers and winemakers," Clarke said.
According to Savoy, home-brewing is perfect for anyone who wants to get more creative in the kitchen while saving money.
"Home-brewing allows you to make anything you can think of. There's a creativity to it," he said, "It’s a lot of fun. If you like to cook, this is a perfection extension of cooking. Plus, you can save money. You could easily make a batch of beer for about half the price you would buy it for in a store."
The store, which occupies 1,400 square feet, will not be big enough to hold classes, though Savoy hopes to expand in the future.
The Homebrew Emporium will hold a grand opening celebration on November 16. Promotions, giveaways and sales will be offered.
The store is at 550 North Ave. For more information, check out the website.
