Amid Heatwave, New Rochelle Opens Cooling Centers

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – With temperatures topping 90 degrees this week as the warm weather continues in New Rochelle, officials have opened up a pair of cooling centers to ensure that some of the city’s most vulnerable residents are able to beat the heat.

With a heat advisory in effect, the city has opened up the Hugh Doyle Senior Center and New Rochelle Public Library as cooling centers. The Senior Center is open until 6 p.m. and the library doors are open daily from Monday through Saturday. It is closed Sunday.

Additionally, residents can frequent the Lincoln Pool until 7 p.m. each day with their Omnicard or pool pass.

On Wednesday, a heat advisory was issued by the Westchester County Health Department, with the National Weather Service putting an air quality alert out until 11 p.m. as Mother Nature continues besieging the area with oppressive summer heat.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures in New Rochelle topped out at 93 degrees with thunderstorms expected to touch down in the area on Thursday with temperatures again approaching 90 degrees.
