The certificate assures that educational programs meet the national standards for diabetes self-management education programs. Education recognition status is verified by an official certificate from ADA and awarded for four years.

The center has been continually recognized by the ADA since 1998 for providing high-quality education that is an essential component of effective diabetes treatment.

Programs that achieve recognition status must have a staff of knowledgeable health professionals who can provide participants with comprehensive information about diabetes management.

“The recognition gives professionals a national standard by which to measure the quality of services they provide,” said Dr. Michael Palumbo, medical director and executive vice president of White Plains Hospital.

“It also assures patients that they will receive high quality care and education from trained professionals with specialized expertise in diabetes.”

Patients with diabetes must closely monitor diet, exercise and insulin and/or medication therapy to control blood glucose levels and achieve an optimal quality of life.

"At White Plains Hospital center, several hundred patients with all forms of diabetes - type I, type II and gestational, are provided with group and individual education sessions each year on techniques to better manage their condition," said Ann Rupp, a registered nurse and certified diabetes educator, director of the Diabetes Education and Treatment Center.

According to the American Diabetes Association, there are 25.8 million people or 8.5 percent of the population in the United States who have diabetes.

While an estimated 18.8 million have been diagnosed, seven million people are not aware that they have this disease.
