Recipients are the Rev. Hyacinth E. Lee, deacon at Trinity St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and Joel Fridovich, administrator of Campus Alternative High School.
Lee has been involved in the New Rochelle community for more than 40 years. She was recruited from her native country of Jamaica by New Rochelle Medical Centerwhat (now Montefiore-New Rochelle). She has been chair of the outreach committee at her church and she initiated the Brown Bag Lunch Program, which annually serves 25,000 people. She is on the board of the Interreligious Council, Meals of Wheels and the Coalition of Mutual Respect.
She also has worked as director of the CHILDD Program, an organization that administers to kids with disabilities. Lee recently returned from Tanzania, where the Trinity St. Paul church is helping children in elementary schools.
Fridovich is a co-chair of the board of commissioners for the New Rochelle Youth Bureau and is president of the board of directors of Family Focus Adoption Services. He has worked with The Children’s Village of Dobbs Ferry, Westchester Community College and Mercy College. He has been a long-time member of the Coalition for Mutual Respect and a board member of the New Rochelle United Way.
The Coalition for Mutual Respect was formed in 1979 as a black-Jewish dialogue in an effort to overcome distrust and animosity in the community. Founded by the Rev. Vernon Shannon of St. Catherine AME Zion Church and Rabbi Amiel Wohl, then Senior Rabbi of Temple Israel of New Rochelle, it continues with the Rev. Michael Rouse, successor to Shannon, who now serves as Co-Chairman with Rabbi Wohl..
