Students Compete In National Scholastic Chess Foundation At Columbus School

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- There were 18 students who competed in the National Scholastic Chess Foundation Winter Classic recently held at Columbus Elementary School.

The students won 12 awards overall and captured the 100th first place team win in the booster section and a second place team win for the reserve section of the Columbus Chess Club. 

The seven individual Booster section awards were First place, Darren Chen; Second place, Deven Coulanges; Third place, Steven Ramos; Fifth place, Luis Jimenez; Second place unrated, Mia Torres; Third place unrated, May Dooley. Ronny Perez also secured a medal. 

Other Booster section team members were Sophia Maldonado, Cynthya Vilcapoma, Maria Chavez, Nicholas Hernandez, and Alex Ciriaco. Awards in the reserve section were Leo Liu in first place, and Kenneth Concha in second place. The other reserve section team member was Julian Magana. In addition, Evelyn Valencia and Leandra Evangelista placed third as a team in the primary novice section. 

Finally, Jason Zheng played in the Championship section for chess players rated over 1000. Adviser Mark Hegenaur leads the team, which continues its fundraising efforts to enable a trip to the kindergarten through sixth grade Scholastic Chess Nationals in Nashville, Tennessee this May.
