NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – A dedicated step coach who has worked with middle school students is trying to start a local high school program so her team and others can continue stepping.
“If 20 students sign up, the team can become a formal high school club,” said Karen Johnson, who has been coaching the step teams at Albert Leonard and Isaac E. Young middle schools.
Johnson, who hopes support for the high school’s Prestige Step Team will gain traction, said middle school students currently trying to pursuit step at a higher level. They have been traveling to the Bronx for expensive, late-night practices.
The new team aims, in part, to alleviate that situation, Johnson said in a statement.
