NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Areli Dominguez, a senior at the College of New Rochelle, was honored Student of the Year by the National Association for Social Workers New York State Chapter at its annual awards dinner Thursday, March 27, at The Davenport Club.

NASW presents this award to culturally competent individuals who not only commit themselves to advocacy but also demonstrate an interest in learning and improving others’ quality of life. Dominguez received this award on the basis of her activities with four social service organizations during the fall of 2013.

As a case manager at AmeriCorps Westhab Services, Dominguez worked and provided services at a family homeless shelter. For the Coachman Family Center, she helped families find affordable housing. Also, while interning at United Community Center of Westchester, Dominguez helped fill out paperwork for families applying for food stamps.

Dean Richard Thompson of the School of Arts and Sciences said, “We are very proud that Areli took initiative by using her credentials. As a student voice for NASW, Areli’s accomplishments make her a great representative of the College’s social work department.”

As a Bronx and Southern Westchester student representative of NASW’s NYS Chapter, Dominguez continues to use her role to both act as a voice for her fellow students and a voice of concern for pressing issues relevant to social work today.

Dominguez said, “I have worked very hard and I am honored that my work was acknowledged by NASW.”

The first Catholic college for women in New York state, The College of New Rochelle was founded in 1904 by the Ursuline Order. The college maintains five other campus locations in New York City for the School of New Resources in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Manhattan. Visit the college’s website at .
