The American Red Cross is searching for eligible donors to give blood throughout February. The organization wants to make sure there is enough blood on hand to supply those in need. There appears to be a small shortage due to weather conditions and sickness. Residents who normally donate their blood have not been able to make or keep their appointments, thus leading to the shortage.

The American Red Cross stresses the importance of having a healthy and diverse supply of blood on hand. The diversity among the blood types is important as well because certain blood types are specific to racial and ethnic backgrounds. Blood needs to be matched as closely as possible between the donor and the recipient.

Blood that matches or closely matches a recipient’s blood type will have better success rates during a transfusion. All types of blood are needed including O, A-negative, and B-negative.

To donate blood, the participant must present a blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification. Participants 17 years of age and older must weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. High school students and other donors 18 years of age or younger must meet the determined height and weight requirements.

To learn more about donating your blood or to schedule an appointment, please download the Red Cross donor app, visit the website at www.redcrossblood.org, or call us at 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
