New Rochelle's Woman Makes Families Her Priority

Lynn Green spends her days caring for area families as vice president of development at Family Services of Westchester in Port Chester and then dedicates countless hours to the New Rochelle Library and the New Rochelle Arts Council.

“Nothing is more important than families,” says Green, a New Rochelle mother of two grown children and wife of Steven. Green, honored by the Westchester Association of Development Officers as Fundraiser of the Year, says she works to give the library all the things the bare-bones budget cannot afford.

“Libraries are incredibly important places. They serve everybody, every age group, ethnicity and religious group.” Pointing to the free access to knowledge and education, Green says libraries are key to a democracy. Green, who says everyone has a library story, fondly talks about her grandmother, who came to the United States from Russia. “She never finished high school, but I always saw her with a book or magazine in her hand. … Now we have a new wave of immigrants. … It makes me happy to see that they use the library.”

Green’s efforts have had a huge impact on the library, leading to the complete renovation of the second floor, refurbishment of the lobby and creation of a local history room. She has also worked with the New Rochelle Arts Council to create beautiful spaces at the library. Green also actively supports the council's efforts throughout New Rochelle.

A member of the board, she is co-chair of Dining for the Arts, in which a series of themed dinners are hosted at homes throughout New Rochelle and followed by a gathering at the Wykagil Country Club for dancing and dessert. One of the council’s biggest fundraisers, the New Rochelle Arts Fest, brings art to the entire city with activities for all ages Sept. 24 and 25.

And even after 10 years, Green says she remains energized in her work at Family Services of Westchester because of all the good it does for people at every stage of life. “I am inspired by the work."
