NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Golden A. Smalls, a resident of New Rochelle for over 80 years, died Jan. 23 at the age of 99. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday.
Born May 12, 1912 in Marion, Va., she was the daughter of Charles T. and Susie B. Young. Smalls graduated public schools of New Rochelle and received a degree in child development from the College of New Rochelle.
She married John Smalls, who predeceased her in 1976. Smalls worked as teacher at Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Care Center of New Rochelle for many years. Smalls was also a life member of St. Catherine AME Zion Church, where she took part in the senior choir, women's choir and taught Sunday school.
Smalls is survived by her sister Beulah Woodward, two nieces and a nephew. She was predeceased by her sisters Geneva Smith, Susie Bailey, Irene Crawley and her brother Charles Young.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Catherine Church. A funeral service will immediately follow at 11 a.m. at the church. Funeral arrangements were made by Barney T. McClanahan Funeral Home.
