New Rochelle's Columbus Chess Team Travels To National Tournament

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Six students from Columbus Elementary School in New Rochelle recently traveled to Nashville, Tenn., to compete in the 2016 National Elementary School K-6 Chess Championships.

The team of fourth-graders placed 30th out of 645 teams in the K-5 U900 section.This was the 14th time the Columbus Chess Club has sent a group of students to the national competition.

The team included students Luis Jimenez, Darren Chen, Deven Coulanges, Esteven Ramos, and Ronny Perez. 

Fifth-grader Jason Zheng competed as an individual in the K-5 Championship section. 

The team was able to travel to the tournament with help from the entire Columbus community, especially the teachers of Columbus, who donated to the club on behalf of the students, team adviser Mark Hegenauer and Ms. Waldron, the parent liaison who facilitates team fundraising.
