Darean Tecalero Guzman, a future freshman at New Rochelle High School, has been welcomed into the scholars program, according to the school district.

Started in 2004, the program identifies high-potential, eighth-grade students from low-income families and provides them with support throughout the student's high school years.

The scholarship will require Guzman to maintain stellar academic and leadership performance in high school while engaging in "rigorous" summer programs, distance education courses, a mentoring program and academic support provided by a personal educational advisor, according to the Johns Hopkins CTY Scholars website.

The program additionally will require Guzman and his parents to participate in several activities over the coming four years.

According to the school district, Guzman will receive $25,000 worth of academic and support services during his four years at New Rochelle High School.
