NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- New Rochelle police and fire department members recently met for their second head-to-head basketball game, with the police scoring the winning points with just seconds left.

The "Battle of the Badges" was for a year's worth of bragging rights and the sides traded the lead throughout. With just three seconds left on the clock and the score knotted at 73, New Rochelle police recruit candidate Rob Johnson sank two free throws to put the game away, 75-73, and even the series between the police officers and firefighters at one game apiece.

"This is a community event of the highest order," said Monroe's Director of Sports Development and Information Gary Axelbank in a statement. "We have supremely talented and dedicated public servants in New Rochelle and tonight they come out in force with their friends and families to represent their profession. They also raised money for charity and ... it just happened to be a thrilling basketball game."

Axelbank set up the game with Detective Terrence Fudge from the New Rochelle Police Association and Rashaun Young of the New Rochelle Fire Association

As part of the Monroe College 80th Homecoming week, the "Battle of the Badges" raised more than $800 for the American Diabetes Association.
