New Rochelle resident Jinoh Hwang bought his ice cream shop on Wolfs Lane in Pelham 13 years ago when it was a Haagen-Dazs. He transformed it into the only official Double Rainbow shop east of Arizona in 2009.
Hwang said he researched meticulously until he found an ice cream company that offered the premium quality he wanted. He said the quality of the ice cream is just as important as the brand.
"I want to provide superb premium ice cream to our neighborhood," Hwang said. "I'm very proud to carry ice cream and yogurt that's very healthy for our neighborhood and our kids."
Double Rainbow has its headquarters in San Francisco and most of its shops are in California. Hwang joined the company because he wanted to sell as natural an ice cream as possible.
Hwang said Double Rainbow selects the cows from which they get the milk to make the ice cream, and that the cows are not treated with hormones. He also gravitated to the brand because the ice cream is certified as kosher. He described the products he sells as "very pure and gourmet."
The owner did not stop researching after he found the proper ice cream. He also found a frozen yogurt company called Only8 that makes treats safe for diabetics and those who are lactose intolerant.
The shop is open all year, but Hwang said the summer months provide a boost to his business. He offers 34 flavors of ice cream, several varieties of frozen yogurt and bulk Godiva chocolates, but Hwang said the sweet treats are not the reason he comes to work every day.
"I'm thinking that I'm not selling the product itself, but the family happiness to our community," Hwang said. "Parents bring their kids here and they experience happiness."
