Building on the success of the 2015 Big Read of "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" in May and June, the library’s theme of “The Adventures Continue!” has inspired workshops, live performance and films for elementary school-age children.

Designed to encourage participation in the Summer Reading Game, the programs offer educational experiences through the summer. Admission to the programs is on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning 15 minutes before the start of each program.

This year’s slate of free program includes Experiments in Cooking and Science, Adventure in Gardening, Yoga and Creative Movement, Adventures in Architecture, Calligraphy, Mexican Dance Classes with Calpulli Mexican Dance Company, Bricks 4 Kidz Workshops, Yoga Journaling and Balloon Bonanza Workshops.

For details, parents may visit www.nrpl.org.

Wednesday matinees at 2 pm in the Ossie Davis Theater will offer films of adventures alternating with live science shows. The free films include "The Lego Movie" (July 8), "How to Train Your Dragon 2" (July 22) and "Paddington" (Aug. 5).

The live science presentations will feature a Superheroes Adventure with Sciencetellers (July 15), Nature Adventures in Your Own Backyard with Sheldrake Environmental Center (July 29) and a South American Adventure with Animal Embassy (Aug. 12).

The free summer reading programs are made possible by the Friends of the New Rochelle Public Library and the Partnership for the Huguenot Children’s Library.

Summer Fun on the Patio at the Huguenot Children’s Library will run Mondays through Fridays, June 29 to Aug. 21, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. (except July 4).

Made possible by the Partnership for the Huguenot Children’s Library, this is a free drop-in program providing summertime fun – pingpong, arts and crafts, jump rope, games, kickball and many more outside activities that are supervised by experienced, enthusiastic adults and teens.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or adult caregiver. The Summer Fun program does not take place in rainy weather.
